A work placement is an opportunity for students to gain experience in their field of study by working for businesses and organizations in the community. Students gain experience working in a variety of real-world situations, and employers appreciate the new ideas and positive attitudes students bring with them to the placement.
Businesses like to see applicants with experience when hiring, work placements are becoming more and more integral to student success. Algonquin College is aiming to have an experiential learning component in every full-time program by 2017.
How do I log onto the Work Placement System?
Students can use their existing Algonquin College network (BlackBoard) IDs and password to log in to the Work Placement System.
Employers can create an account by clicking here. After you’ve created an account, employers just sign in with their e-mail address.
How do I contact the employer of a work placement posting?
Employers choose whether they prefer to be contacted by e-mail or by phone regarding their work placement postings. Use which ever contact method appears in the posting.
Can I find my own work placements?
Yes! If you’ve found a work placement on your own, tell your supervisor to create an employer account on the Work Placement System. They can then create a work placement posting and indicate that they have already selected a student for the position.
How do I keep track of all the hours I spend at my placements?
When you finish your work placement, use the Work Placement System to submit the number of hours that you worked for approval by your employer. Once the hours have been approved, they count towards your final total.
